January 2022: Letter from the Director
New Year, New Events
It’s hard to believe we are entering our third year of the pandemic. I’m proud of the Institute’s ability to remain flexible and innovative as we’ve continued to adapt to the ever-changing landscape.
Last year we hosted 14 events with 2,204 attendees and another 1,533 views of event recordings. Virtual opportunities for our audience to join us are here to stay, but will you join us in person in 2022? Please take a few minutes to fill out our event survey. Your feedback will help guide our outreach programs for the year and beyond.
In the meantime, we have two upcoming events. The Walt Klenz Lectureship series on Wine Business returns on February 23 with UC Davis alumna Martha Stoumen of Martha Stoumen Wines. She has dedicated herself to natural farming and winemaking, becoming a leader in low-intervention wines.
Savor: The Terroir of Beer, on March 2, brings together innovators in the beer industry. Ron Silberstein is co-founder of Admiral Maltings, which produces sustainable craft malts from locally sourced California grain. Missy Begay is co-founder and creative director of Bow & Arrow Brewing Co., the first Native-woman-owned brewery in the country. It’s sure to be an engaging conversation that will expand your idea of terroir.
Here’s to a new year and new events celebrating wine, brewing, and food sciences! We hope to see you soon.
Sincerely,
Andrew Waterhouse
