Andy Waterhouse and Charlie Bamforth debate the joys and social value of beer and wine, all to benefit UC Davis graduate students.

Alcohol seems to have become a dirty word. Day after day, we hear or read something negative about alcoholic beverages, and these “scare stories” are undoubtedly one reason why sales of wine, beer, and other products are declining. Of course, there are other factors, including the growing popularity of marijuana and broader lifestyle changes. Younger people, for example, may be more likely to spend time at home on their computers than to socialize as previous generations did.

It is high time, then, that we take another look at the joys and benefits of beer and wine. Reprising the friendly banter they began some years ago, and considering today’s changing social norms, Andy Waterhouse and Charlie Bamforth will debate the relative societal value of these two ancient and noble beverages. Which is more complex and difficult to make? Which offers greater variety? Which is better suited to the dinner table? Which has a place at a wider range of social occasions? And where do beer and wine stand in the eyes of the public?

The event promises to be highly educational and hugely entertaining—all in support of a good cause. Proceeds will benefit graduate students in the UC Davis Departments of Viticulture and Enology and Food Science and Technology.
